  • (1888PressRelease) October 13, 2010 - Tennessee Association, Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides the Destination ImagiNation® program, has decided to continue its grant program to provide funds for schools and organizations to help establish new Destination ImagiNation teams in Tennessee. Grant applications can be obtained by visiting http://www.taidi.org. The deadline for applying for this season is November 12, 2010.

Destination ImagiNation is an educational program in which student teams solve open-ended Challenges and present their solutions at Tournaments. Each year, Destination ImagiNation creates new and exciting Challenges with help from more than 38,000 volunteers. More than 1.3-million young people from first grade through college have participated in Destination ImagiNation programs. The international tournament is held annually on the campus of The University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

"I believe it's important for all students to participate in Destination ImagiNation because it teaches a core set of essential 21st Century skills including experiential learning, time management, delegation, teamwork and goal setting," said Linda Chambers, Affiliate Director for Destination ImagiNation Tennessee. "By taking these skills, and teaching students how to use their creativity to solve problems, you have a powerful educational program that is fun and engaging."

Awards will be based on applicant justification statements, and plans for recruiting and registering new Destination ImagiNation participants.

The Circle of Friends homeschooling group in Nashville was among the organizations winning the grant last year. Organizer Shandell Northern said, "We thought that if we could win the grant not only would our children be able to participate but we could share the opportunity with other homeschooling families and minorities. The grant did just what we wanted it to."

"Currently we have more than 1,000 participants and 400 volunteers participating in Destination ImagiNation across Tennessee", said Rick Wimberly, Chairman of the Board of Tennessee Association, Inc. "We have seen first-hand students throughout the state become better prepared to creatively solve problems they face in their personal lives, their communities, and their work places through Destination ImagiNation."
