Ten Signs Divorce May Be in Your Future, According to the Real Housewives

  • (1888PressRelease) September 27, 2011 - Irvine, CA - Fights, abuse, constant criticism, being alone, living in fear, and getting into major debt are all signs a marriage may be in serious trouble.

If you follow the Real Housewives TV series, you've probably seen these issues pop up along the way. But are they actually indicators of divorce? One real-life housewife may have some answers.

"I didn't want to get a divorce," says Judy Joseph Hamlin, author of the book "From Riches to Happiness." "I would have been happy to spend the rest of my life as an Orange County housewife. But when I realized my husband and I barely spoke anymore, and I was unhappy more than I was happy, I knew it was time to step up. Our marriage wasn't going to make it, and we had to let it go."

Many women find it difficult even to think about the D word. Many see it as a sign they've failed, or they worry what it will do to their children. Some women depend on their husbands for money or even for their own self-worth and can't imagine how they'll make it on their own. According to Divorce.com, almost 50% of married people in the US are unhappy and as a result get divorced.

"To those women," says Ms. Hamlin, "I have just one thing to say: do what's best for you. And that may mean something as life-changing as not staying in a marriage that causes you pain. If you're unhappy every day you're with your partner, that may well be a sign that you need to get out of the relationship you're in."

According to Ms. Hamlin, it is time to end your marriage if your spouse is:
    • Abusive, either emotionally or physically
    • Addicted to drugs, alcohol, or gambling
    • Cheating
    • Fighting with you constantly
    • Not interested in resolving your marital problems
    • Not supportive
    • Dreading spending time with you
    • More interested in spending time with friends
    • Controlling
    • Always unhappy and critical of you

"Divorce is never easy," says Ms. Hamlin. "It can be the most difficult thing you go through in your life. But I can say from experience, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and it's not a train coming to run you down. It's a whole new life-one you can build for yourself, full of all the love and happiness you deserve. It's time to live for yourself."
