  • (1888PressRelease) August 14, 2012 - Virgin Galactic has been under development for many years and at July's Farnborough International Air Show 2012, Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson confirmed that SpaceShipTwo has been qualified for suborbital flight and test runs could begin by the end of the year, with himself and his children being the first passengers. According to Virgin Galactic's official website, SpaceShipTwo is designed to carry six passengers and two pilots 60 miles above ground level. Passengers will have the option of floating in zero gravity or remaining seated and observing the Earth from above through large windows. Virgin Galactic aim to start commercial services in 2014, and already 536 people have put in deposits to take part in one of these flights, the Telegraph reports in the article Commercial space flights to generate more than $600 million, study suggests. This figure is more than the entire number of people who have ever travelled into space; according to Sir Richard Branson's blog this group of budding astronauts now includes the actor Ashton Kutcher.

Tempest Elite Marketing has been researching the effect of 'space tourism' on the global economy. A ticket for a seat on SpaceShipTwo will set each astronaut back by $200,000; Virgin Galactic's Chief Executive George Whitesides reported that the company has already received $70 million in deposits. The Telegraph reports in the article Commercial space flights to generate more than $600 million, study suggests that a report commissioned by the US Federal Aviation Administration has valued the economic benefit of commercial space flights as between $600 million and $1.6 billion in their first ten years of operations. The study has uncovered around 8000 high-worth individuals that "are sufficiently interested and have spending patterns likely to result in the purchase of a suborbital flight". The report notes that with a reduction in ticket prices and further brand awareness the potential for growth could be even more than anticipated.

Tempest Elite Marketing is pleased to report that the UK economy is set to benefit from the new developments in the space industry. As related the Telegraph article Farnborough Airshow: Branson's Virgin Galactic 'spaceship' in UK debut the Science Minister David Willets has reported that, unlike the general forecast for the UK economy, the British space industry has grown by £1.6 billion since 2009, and is currently worth £9.1 billion, providing 29,000 jobs.

Tempest Elite Marketing Managing Director Qaysar Bhatti says "I am personally very excited by the prospect of commercial space travel, not only because this demonstrates how far the space industry has progressed over the last few years but also because of the positive implications this will have for the British economy. I understand how important this is from working in the direct sales and marketing industry, another of the small number of sectors that are growing in this economic climate. It comes as no surprise that Virgin would be the company to revolutionise commercial space flight - if you look at their track record they are constantly at the forefront of the global industry, always looking to the future and finding new ways to innovate and diversify. Richard Branson has never been afraid to take a risk and this time his vision and tenacity have really paid off. I certainly anticipate that in the not too distant future I will become a suborbital passenger myself!"
