Teck Holmes Introduces Black Tie Week
Film and television star Teck Holmes invites the community to take a visible stand against violence by celebrating Black Tie Week from September 3rd - 8th.
- (1888PressRelease) August 08, 2013 - Found by Teck Holmes and actor Eric Bush, Black Tie Week promotes anti-violence and raises awareness on the issues related to public perception facing our young men, and encourages the community, parents, educators, business owners, politicians and other leaders to promote violence-free lifestyles.
This celebration will kick off on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 with Black Tie Tuesday. Eric and Teck encourage everyone to wear a black tie, bow tie or pocket square to support the cause. Each day will have a theme to involve the community and activities scheduled throughout the week include Windsor Knot Wednesday, Bow Tie Thursday, Cufflink Friday, Dress Sock Saturday and Shinny Shoe Sunday.
"Black Tie Week encourages our entire community to change the perception of young men," said Teck Holmes, Co-Founder of Black Tie Week. "The campaign brings together children, parents, schools, and businesses as we look for innovative ways to keep kids and communities violence free."
The black tie symbolizes a continuing commitment to improve the public perception of young African American men in our communities. In February 2012, 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was followed and killed by George Zimmerman because he looked like someone he thought was a threat, simply based on the clothes he wore. Shortly after Martin's death, citizens from around the country began wearing hoodies in protest of the tragedy.
"Black Tie Week gives us the opportunity to be vocal and visible in our efforts to achieve a violence-free community and change the perception of our young men," said Eric Bush. "If Zimmerman followed Trayvon because he was wearing a hoodie, we shouldn't give him and people like him more ammunition to use against us. Wearing a suit, looking sharp and feeling sharp will boost the self esteem tremendously."
