Teach For America Leases at Robert Treat Center in Newark
Non-Profit Relocates within the Berger Organization Portfolio, Doubling its Space.
- Newark, NJ (1888PressRelease) October 22, 2013 - Teach For America, the national corps of college graduates who commit to teaching in low-income communities, has leased 9,080 square feet at The Berger Organization's Robert Treat Center, 50 Park Place in Newark. The non-profit will relocate to the property this fall from Berger's Military Park Building at 60 Park Place, where it has maintained its Greater Newark operation since 2004.
Teach For America works in partnership with communities to expand educational opportunity for children facing the challenges of poverty. Founded in 1990, Teach For America recruits and develops a diverse corps of outstanding individuals of all academic disciplines to commit two years to teach in high-need schools and become lifelong leaders in the movement to end educational inequity. This fall, 11,000 corps members are teaching in 48 urban and rural regions across the country while 32,000 alumni work across sectors to ensure that all children have access to an excellent education, according to the Teach for America website. The New Jersey office will support 210 corps members placed in six communities across the region this year, and over 800 alumni.
"It always is gratifying to watch tenants at our office properties grow, especially when they work to fulfill vital community-building needs," noted Brendan Berger, vice president of The Berger Organization. "We are pleased that Teach For America chose a building within our portfolio to meet its changing requirements."
"We are eager to move into a space that will allow us to work efficiently and be a resource for teachers and people who care about kids," said Fatimah Burnam-Watkins, executive director of Teach For America-New Jersey.
Built in 1916, the 100,000-square-foot, 15-story Robert Treat Center is adjacent to the Berger-owned, 176-room Best Western Robert Treat Hotel. It sits within Newark's cultural, dining and entertainment hub, proximate to the city's transportation network including Newark Penn Station, PATH light rail, and the Broad Street Station. Major tenants include the Associated Press, the City of Newark, and the State of New Jersey.
In addition to Robert Treat Center, The Berger Organization's Newark portfolio includes landmark office buildings at 760 and 570 Broad Street, and 10 Park Place.
