TangibleFX Champion a New Era for Guitar Effects with the Motion Controlled MoovFX Echo iPhone App
The MoovFX Echo app lets guitarists control the volume of an echo effect with the angle of their guitar, by attaching the iPhone to the guitar. This is a brand new concept for controlling guitar effects.
- (1888PressRelease) July 25, 2012 - Bristol, UK - An innovative new iPhone app from TangibleFX is attempting to redefine the way that guitarists interact with their music. The MoovFX Echo app lets guitarists run the sound from the guitar through the phone and back out again with a delay or echo effect. The phone is then attached to the guitar, which allows the volume of the echo to be controlled by the angle of the guitar itself, utilising the iPhone's built in accelerometer. Raising and lowering the neck will make the echo louder and quieter; a brand new way of manipulating effects.
This concept was spawned from research at Bristol University's Interaction Lab, where the founders Lee Arromba and Dan Newton completed their computer science degrees. In 2010, Lee created a body suit of accelerometers to control various effects and Dan invented a generic system to turn different sensors into musical controllers via MIDI. This work has been academically recognised through published papers and innovation awards, and in 2011 they joined forces to bring their ideas to the masses.
"We believe that, when it comes to music it is the musicians that know best, not the developers" says Dan. "Despite being avid musicians ourselves, we have always worked really closely with a variety of independent musicians to make relevant, intuitive and fun systems. Everyone in the industry seemed to be focussing on the actual effects and sounds themselves rather than the experience that the musician has. We recognise that fun breeds creativity, and hope that this new approach to performance control will lead to even more great music in the future."
The MoovFX series is the successor to the iMoov - a motion sensitive MIDI controller app tailored towards DJs and producers. "Although the iMoov is compatible with live instruments, it requires the sound to be processed and controlled on third party software" says Lee. "Generally, it has always been guitarists that have pushed the boundaries of effects. During our original user testing they were the ones who had the most ideas, and the most fun. So we really wanted to create something specifically for them, and manipulate the effects directly on the phone."

The Echo app is the first of a number of motion controlled apps in the MoovFX series due to be released over the coming weeks, all priced at £4.99 ($7.99) with a 'Lite' version also available to try before you buy. On sale worldwide through the App Store in the Music category.
