- (1888PressRelease) October 07, 2011 - As an internationally respected bariatric surgeon, Dr. Chris Cobourn of the Surgical Weight Loss Centre (SWLC) in association with Dr. Z. Wojtasik , Dr. M. Kurrek, Dr. A. Kiss and Dr. S.L. Dain published a clinical report in the journalObesity Surgery in September 2011. This study documented thatLaparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAGB) can be safely performedin an outpatient facility in a group of patients at high risk for sleep apnea. This is SWLC's second publication contributing to the body of medical knowledge and literature regarding LAGB. The clinic's first publication was published in 2010, where Drs. Cobourn and Mumford published the four year study on the safety of LAGB as an outpatient procedure for morbid obesity in Canada.
The current study reviewed 2,370 patients who had LAGB surgery between 2005 and 2009. 746 of the 2,370 patients (31%) were classified at high risk for sleep apnea by having at least three STOP-BANG criteria. Despite the fact that these were considered high risk patients there were no cases of respiratory failure, re-intubation and there were no deaths The 30 day anesthesia related rate of complications (morbidity) was less than 0.5%. None of the complications were severe and there were no patients that required hospitalization.
Lap-BandŽsurgery is the most popular bariatric procedure in Australia, Canada and Europe. The benefits of the procedure include low complication rates, shorter hospital stay and none of the nutritional deficits possible with other bariatric procedures. The Lap-BandŽ is the only weight loss device recognized approved by Health Canada and to improve or resolve Type 2 Diabetes. Over 750,000 Allergan Lap-BandŽ devices have been implanted worldwide and the procedure continues to grow in popularity.
Established in 2005, SWLC is the highest volume Lap-BandŽ and Gastric Balloon clinic in Canada having performed over 3,500 weight loss procedures. SWLC's Medical Director & Surgeon, Dr. Cobourn has been arespected surgeon since 1989 and has participated in expert committees establishing standards for bariatric surgery. In addition to his activity as an invited speaker at national and international meetings, Dr. Cobourn is a proud contributor to Lap-BandŽ research studies regarding its effectiveness and safety.
