  • Orlando, FL (1888PressRelease) May 10, 2014 - During weekly Chapel Service on Wednesday, Sweetwater Episcopal Academy Head of School Janet Stroup announced that SEA 5th Grader Fiona M. is the recipient of the 2014 Dreamer & Doer Award. The Disney Dreamers & Doers program recognizes students who have a caring spirit, consistently demonstrate outstanding character and lead by example. Approximately 400 students are chosen by their schools as the 2014 Disney Dreamer & Doer.

The process begins when students are asked to nominate themselves by writing a 300-word paragraph describing their achievements. These achievements don't necessarily have to be academic and may include examples such as "strengthening their families; conservation/environmental projects; helping others; safety; school achievement in spite of barriers; improving their schools; serving as a role model for siblings/friends; or other positive actions." The student must also ask a teacher to champion his or her application by writing a 75-word endorsement. Essays are submitted to the Head of School and a school winner is chosen.

Fiona started supporting charities at a young age. When she was in first grade she wrote a letter to President Obama about the Gulf oil spill and its effect on marine life. She cut her hair and donated it to be used to make booms of hair to soak up the oil and protect the wildlife. As a second grader Fiona and her brother started a company called Recycle Sports. They collect used tennis balls to donate to senior citizens and rehab centers to place on the bottom of the residents' walkers. In 3rd Grade Fiona and her friend Samantha co-founded an organization called LEAP (Leadership, Enrichment, Adventure, and Philanthropy). The group promotes leadership, service, and fun and has raised over $10,000 to support breast cancer research, children's organizations, and animal care. LEAP is open to all girls at SEA and has grown from 3 members to 44 this year. Through bake sales, lemonade stands, and 5K races, Fiona has also supported the Ronald McDonald House and Toys for Tots. She also donated 12 inches of her hair to Locks of Love. Her newest passion is horses, and Fiona is now a sponsor of the Peterson and Smith Equine Hospital - a horse sanctuary in Ocala for sick or injured horses.

Says Fiona "I believe that kindness and helping people are contagious. If you are creative, enthusiastic, and share your love and commitment for change, other people want to help. Then their enthusiasm spreads, and before you know it, you have created change. I want to make the world a better place, and I think I can do it!"

Congratulations Fiona. You are truly a dreamer and doer and we are very proud to have you as SEA's honoree for the 2014 Disney Dreamers and Doers Award!
