Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas that is released by the decay of radium. It is present in all outside air in varying amounts, but because of the low concentration it is not considered a hazard. Quite often, it is present in buildings at levels considered unsafe. Modern houses are constructed in a more air-tight manner for insulation purposes. This slows the air exchange rate of the house and results in a stronger concentration of radon gas. The gas in the soil leaks into the living quarters from leaks in the basement, from an unprotected crawl space or from beneath a concrete slab floor.
SWAT Environmental Uses the Active Soil Depressurization Radon Mitigation Technique
The usual method of radon mitigation is the installation of a pipe running from the area below the concrete slab to above the roofline of the house. This is usually done at an inconspicuous corner of the house, but can be run through the attic if necessary. A specially designed, inline, electric fan pulls air from beneath the slab. The process is called active soil depressurization. If a crawl space is involved, radon mitigation is accomplished by extending the plastic pipe below the plastic membrane covering the ground in the crawl space and exhausting the radon gas to above the roofline.

The gas leaks into the basement through cracks in the concrete slab, the basement walls, floor drains, sump pumps and penetrations of utility lines. Stopping radon infiltration by sealing these cracks is usually ineffective when performed without any additional radon mitigation work. Cracks in the walls are inaccessible if the walls are finished with sheetrock. During the radon mitigation process, the cracks will be sealed as much as possible to improve the depressurization of the area below the slab.
