Survey Points to Time as Number One Concern for Windows 10 Migration

  • (1888PressRelease) April 20, 2018 - SEATTLE — Adaptiva, the market leader in modern endpoint management and security, today announced the results of its 2018 Windows 10 Enterprise Impact Survey, an annual survey that tracks factors associated with the migration to Windows 10. The latest survey surprisingly indicated that even though companies are highly engaged in the process of migrating to Windows 10, the pace of migration is much slower than expected, particularly in comparison to projections made in Adaptiva’s 2017 report. Factors hindering migration include the time required to plan, test, deploy, and maintain Windows 10; the staff size needed to effectively manage migration and beyond; and costs that have emerged as companies get further along in the transition process.

    • Time required and associated costs are more significant than teams anticipated
    • Security remains key driver for migration

“Now that enterprises are in the thick of Windows 10 migration, they’re realizing that it takes longer and costs more than they anticipated, but there is no turning back,” said Jim Souders, chief executive officer at Adaptiva. “It’s become an imperative for companies to identify solutions that accelerate deployment while decreasing costs. And it’s vital that they figure out how to do this without compromising security or employee productivity.”

    Time Is Top Concern

Time is the number one issue for teams engaged in Windows 10 migration. From the time required to deploy Windows 10 across all machines to the time it takes to manage the new OS, the reality of the migration process has been more involved than initially believed. As a result, companies are not as far along as they expected they would be today. According to last year’s survey, 52% of respondents expected to be past halfway at this point. This year, only 40% have met that goal. Additional findings show that:

    • More than a third of respondents report that it will likely take their companies more than a year to move all their remaining systems to the new OS, and another 21% expect migration to occupy the remainder of the year.
    • Time is a bigger hurdle for completion of the migration process than lack of skilled IT team members.
    • Over a quarter (26%) of respondents feel that teams working on Windows 10 migration are stretched too thin.

    Costs Emerge as an Issue

In last year’s survey, costs didn’t get a lot of attention, but in 2018, they’ve become a much bigger concern. As companies move further along in the migration process, the unanticipated real-world costs associated with deploying and maintaining Windows 10 become more visible. This year:

    • Cost was mentioned as an issue by 41% of respondents, making it one of the greatest concerns of IT teams.
    • In an attempt to resolve issues associated with speed of deployment and the ability to maintain Windows 10, companies are faced with investing in more people, purchasing a solution to automate the process, or slowing deployment of Windows 10 even more.
    • Enterprises have been overwhelmed by the number of vendors selling solutions aimed at easing the transition to Windows 10, but they are unsure of what they need. As a result, they wind up paying for more than they should.

Security Remains the Biggest Driver for Windows 10 Migration

Despite the complexities enterprises face with the shift to a new OS, security is a forcing function for completion. Given the increase in volume as well as sophistication of today’s security threats, which can have a tremendous impact on a company’s bottom line, securing the enterprise must be a top priority.

In fact, security was a driver for about three-quarters of survey respondents (74%). Of the security features that matter most:

    • Significant improvements to BitLocker made it the most compelling feature.
    • Windows Defender is also gaining momentum, leading to its position as the second most popular feature, moving up in the rankings over the past year.
    • Identity Protection and Access Control rounded out the list of top security features.
