Fourie was crowned as Miss Deaf SA last year. She says that the first time she became at ease with her impairment was at 14 years old, when she survived a shooting. Subsequently, she realised that her impairment was inconsequential compared to the fact that she was still alive, and this has ultimately made her more compassionate and sensitive towards others.

She also states that her deaf status does not define her as a person. "It's impossible to turn my back on my hearing disability, because it is shaped me into the person I am today," she says.
