Synthetic drugs are exacting a toll on the health and well-being of our nation's young people. This new prevention pamphlet aims at educating parents on the dangers of synthetic drugs and how to spot warning signs of use.

All across the country, unethical businesses and chemists are creating and distributing these dangerous, and in many cases legal, substances. By making slight changes to the chemical structure of already illegal drugs, new compounds are being created that mimic the effects of their parent substances. In Focus: A Parent's Guide - Synthetic Drugs is a publication to assist parents in protecting their children from the dangerous consequences of experimenting with synthetic drugs.

Sold over the Internet or in local gas stations and head shops, these new compounds are completely untested and the short- and long-term effects are unknown. Fake marijuana and bath salts, two examples of synthetic drugs, have led to a huge spike in poison control calls and emergency room visits. According the American Association of Poison Control Centers over 13,000 calls were made in 2011 up from 3,200 calls in 2010. "Young people are essentially making themselves guinea pigs in an undocumented synthetic drug research experiment. These drugs are untested, unregulated and unsafe," says Greg Fox, Jr., President of Education Specialty Publishing in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The new publication, A Parent's Guide - Synthetic Drugs, gives parents an overview of the synthetic drug problem and provides them with knowledge to arm themselves in defending their children's well-being. This resource gives parents an idea of what synthetic drugs are, what they look like, warning signs of use and links to additional sources of information and support.
