  • (1888PressRelease) June 24, 2011 - Subrata Roy, who was in the United States to deliver a speech at Harvard University, was felicitated by H.R. Shah at the events at NASDAQ. TV ASIA chairman H.R. Shah has hosted two receptions in honor of the chairman and managing worker of "Sahara India Pariwar," Subrata Roy Sahara at Times Square, New York, and at the TV ASIA studios in Edison, New Jersey.

Both the events were conducted by TV ASIA's senior vice president and news director in thehonor of Mr Subrata Roy. The NASDAQ event was attended by senior diplomats, including the Consul General of India, Prabhu Dayal, and the Consul General of Canada, John Prato. Prominent members of the South Asian community, corporate figures and members of the press also attended.

Several state leaders from across the political spectrum turned out for the New Jersey reception.
Shah, in his welcome address at both the venues, paid tribute to the vision and generosity of Subrata Roy, who he noted started from humble beginnings in 1978 to build a $ 23-billion empire today. Shah reminded the audience that Sahara Pariwar is one of the largest employers in the world with over one million employees.

Prabhu Dayal, speaking at NASDAQ, referred to H.R. Shah as a household name in the Indian American community and described TV ASIA as the leading community channel in North America. The Consul General noted the humble beginnings of Subrata Roy, paying tribute to his phenomenal growth and contributions not only to India but to the world. He made special mention of the fact that Roy continues to refer to himself today not as a CEO or chairman but as "managing worker" of Sahara India Pariwar, reflecting his humility.

During the "Question and Answer" session at both venues, Subrata Roy explained the philosophy of Sahara Pariwar, describing the organization not as a corporation, but as a family. The spirit and values of family, he said, were what made it successful and helped it blossom into a bigger entity. He described himself as a member of that large family of a million people with his role being that of a guardian, only because every family had to have a guardian. He said that philosophy of family was why it was one of the only large organizations of its kind, whose workers voluntarily chose not to become members of any labor union.

At the NASDAQ event, Subrata Roy disclosed he had committed to President Barack Obama during the President's visit to India, that Sahara India Pariwar would soon launch a project in the United States that would create 5,000 jobs in the first two years and create a total of 100,000 jobs a few years down the line.

In New Jersey, local legislators asked him to consider investing in their state. Woodbridge Mayor John McCormac made the case for such investment by saying the Indian American community was solely responsible for revitalizing commerce in Woodbridge and Edison Township. Therefore, he noted, if Subrata Roy sought the best place to invest anywhere in the United States, he was in the right place, in the state of New Jersey, and specifically in the towns of Edison and Woodbridge.

Hours after the conclusion of the New Jersey event , Subrata Roy Sahara flew back to India to attend the Cricket World Cup final between India and Sri Lanka in Mumbai. Sahara India Pariwar is the major sponsor of the Cricket World Cup.
