Hackathon Represents Latest Coding Skills Opportunity for East Palo Alto High Schoolers.
- San Jose, CA (1888PressRelease) November 14, 2014 - On November 15, in a follow up to its successful inaugural StreetCode Summer Camp [www.epacoding.org] Live In Peace and the Sequoia Union High School District will support the StreetCode Academy to help East Palo Alto high schoolers and recent high school graduates learn key technical and coding skills that will directly and rapidly enable them to cross Silicon Valley's formidable digital divide.
With accomplished tech luminaries and mentors who will provide basic coding skills to make websites, video games and iOS and Android mobile apps in a real-world challenge hackathon environment, the StreetCode Academy Weekend Hackathon also gives attendees the opportunity for self expression through a hip hop dance workshop, basketball, a mixed martial arts training session and a beatboxing workshop.
"The digital divide is still widening. Today there are entrepreneurs and businesses that are succeeding, while many of our youth in East Palo Alto are still being left behind," said Heather Starnes, Executive Director of Live In Peace.
"This weekend's hackathon coding, media, arts and professionalism. These activities will be part of a larger movement to demonstrate the power of our community and our integrated approach of CS and high-tech classes, character and professional development, as well as a community-based hacker space will foster a culture of innovation to grow students' enthusiasm for learning," said Olatunde Sobomehin, StreetCode Academy Director.
"Many successful valley entrepreneurs, veteran engineers, and others are looking for meaningful ways to teach the key coding skills which will enable young people to create mobile apps, websites and contribute to other in-demand projects," said Shadi Barhoumi, StreetCode Co-Founder.
