Stivi: Extreme Portraiture at Agora Gallery NYC
Chelsea's Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Belgian painter Stivi in Forms and Formalities. Agora Gallery opens its doors for public viewing of this exhibition on April 1st with a reception on Thursday April 7, from 6pm to 8pm. Admission is free.
- New York, NY (1888PressRelease) March 18, 2016 - Belgian painter Stivi takes portraiture to its extreme in her oil works. She presents her subjects in dramatic close-up, filling the frame so much with their faces that even their hair and necks - identifying features in most portraits - are often cropped out by the canvas, and the body is rarely visible. It is clear that Stivi is most interested in faces: expressions, skin, eyes, lips, the distinctive bend of a nose bridge, the wrinkle of a forehead. Her portraits confront the viewer head on with a range of emotions from thoughtful to searching to anxious. They are not smiling for the camera, but revealing a piece of themselves with affecting rawness.
Stivi aims to represent a wide range of ethnicities and personalities with her body of work. She paints in a hyperrealistic technique, with the smallest detail accounted for. Chiaroscuro lighting and bold, graphic elements add to the emotional atmosphere.
Born in the Balkans, Stivi today lives in the town of Liège, Belgium, where she is a student at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. She is also skilled in photography, sculpture, and printmaking.

About the Exhibition
Forms and Formalities: A New Exhibition at Agora Gallery
Artists of all walks of life come together in the exhibition Forms and Formalities to express their inner visions, personal stories, and hopes and dreams for the future. Ranging from the highly representational to the highly abstract, the works on display encompass a great collection of exciting colors and motions. With an expert hand, these artists exercise their talents with intoxicating results. As clear subjects emerge from a haze of abstraction and emotion, we explore what we can see in art, how we come to these interpretations, and why we identify with them.
