Though there are several legends about the origin of Claddagh rings, the one believed to be most accurate involves a member of the Joyce clan from Galway who sailed to the West Indies, and who was captured and sold into slavery, working for Moorish goldsmith in North Africa. During his long imprisonment, he learned the goldsmith's art and created the Claddagh ring design as a tribute to his love back in Ireland. His loyalty and commitment to her were illustrated by the charming motifs he chose for the legendary Claddagh ring. Two tiny hands, gently clasping a crowned heart symbolized the sacred nature of romantic love, loyalty, friendship, and faithfulness. Finally freed from slavery, Joyce returned to Ireland to find the woman he loved so much waiting for him. She wore her Claddagh ring until the end of her days.
