  • Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC (1888PressRelease) May 09, 2012 - Robert Macia, PE, LEED AP, president of Stewart Engineering (http://www.stewart-eng.com), has announced that the firm has received the National Recognition Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies for serving as structural engineer for Buckner Companies Home Office project. The Buckner Home Office, serving as the headquarters for the Graham, N.C.-based steel erector and crane rental provider, has been recognized for both its design and its green sustainability efforts. This 12,000-square-foot, one-of-a-kind project used existing materials from Buckner's "boneyard" of parts and pieces of projects from the last 62 years. In addition to achieving highly aesthetic and sustainable results, the reuse of steel salvaged from past products helped to cut back on labor, material and production costs. The total budget and actual cost for the project was $3 million.

    QUOTES:
"We are proud to be recognized for our work and sustainability efforts," said Macia. "The practice of reusing old materials for new purposes is one that has proved to be extremely beneficial in terms of costs and energy use. Through this process, we were able to create a sustainable and aesthetically pleasing environment."

    DETAILS:
    - Approximately 40 percent of the building materials for the project were re-used from the Buckner "boneyard."

    - Girders from Clemson University's Littlejohn Coliseum renovation and a connecting bridge, erected by
Buckner in 1972 on University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's campus, were used to build the Buckner home office.

    - Weinstein Friedlein Architects, based out of Carrboro, N.C., served as the design architects on this project.
