  • Boston, MA-NH (1888PressRelease) August 31, 2012 - Artist Stevie Black will have a reception for the new photoworks called "Articulations" from his ongoing Visual Quilts Project on Sunday, September 2nd, 2012 between 2-4 p.m. at the Rocky Neck Gallery, 53 Rocky Neck Avenue, Gloucester MA 01930. A prestigious juried program, produced in conjunction with the Rocky Neck Art Colony and the Rocky Neck Art Association, the Summer Artist Series has showcased the work of a wide-range artists from across the U.S. This show marks the first time these works have been exhibited and the show runs from August 30 - September 18, 2012.

Black received his BFA in Photography and Film Studies from Philadelphia College of Art (now University of the Arts). He worked commercially as a traditional photographic printer for galleries, museums, ad agencies and fine artists throughout much of the 80s. Black's work has been exhibited in many group and solo shows, including at the Port of History Museum in Philadelphia and was a prize winner in a Print Club Photography Exhibition (now The Print Center) and other groups shows. In the 90s, he transitioned his art practice to mainly drawing, painting and installation using letterforms, visual language and photographic history as his subject matter. He was a member of Vox Populi Gallery in Philadelphia and participated in several shows, including a solo show, before returning to New England in the mid-90s.

Throughout the 2000s, first at the SMFABoston and later as a member of Mixit Print Studio in Somerville, MA, Black intensively explored various styles of traditional and alternative printmaking, including etching, aquatint, monoprint, white ground and carborundum processes. His work now, as then, is an exploration of both natural and man-made forms and their connection/derivation; visually choosing the space between each as the place where the greater understanding might exist. His work is often about perception, sensation, and the role or starting point of the viewer. His printwork was on display earlier this year in the highly-regarded and long-running show, ReThink Ink - Mixit @ 25 Exhibition that was at the Boston Public Library and his work was included in a boxed portfolio produced by Mixit for inclusion into the BPL's permanent collection.

After 2007, Black served in various professional capacities in interactive design and marketing industry, most actively as a creative director for an interactive search engine marketing firm in the Boston area. Since 2011, he has consulted with companies regarding their website redesigns for better search and engagement, as well as providing content marketing strategies and content development. He currently is working with hospitality, tourism and manufacturing clients to improve their online marketing ROI as he transitions to a career in surface and textile design. In addition, Black and his partner, Gigi Mederos, have spent two summers on Rocky Neck, having opened galleries on the Madfish Wharf. This season, they opened Aquatro Gallery to glowing reviews and have had sustained success selling hand-painted textiles and hand-crafted gifts based on their authentic and original designs. Aquatro Gallery has been featured in Art New England and North Shore Art Throb magazines.
