- (1888PressRelease) December 17, 2011 - Sterlite Copper has sponsored Rs 5 lakh for the construction of additional classrooms at Hindu Harijan Primary School, Gandhinagar, Thoothukudi.
Mr.R.Rajasekarapandy, Head - Corporate Social Responsibility presented the cheque for Rs 5 lakh to Mr.Ashish Kumar IAS, District Collector, Thoothukudi at district collectorate here recently.
The teachers of the school which accommodates 169 students from Ist to Vth Standard are taking classes under trees since there are insufficient classrooms. Sterlite decided to sponsor the construction of the classrooms on the request from the District Rural Development Agency and the school management. The government is spending Rs 10 lakh for the construction while Sterlite decided to sponsor Rs 5 lakh for the same. The project is implemented under Self Sufficiency Scheme.
Sterlite has also sponsored Rs 2 lakh for the construction of toilets at Manal Matha higher secondary school recently. Sterlite is also running 21 evening study centres benefitting around 1600 students. Scholarships are also being provided to poor children every year by the company.
Mr.Arun Mani, Project Director, District Rural Development Agency and Mr.Vetivel, Secretary, Hindu Harijan Primary School were also present during the event.
