  • Salinas, CA (1888PressRelease) January 13, 2013 - On Monday, March 11, 2013, The National Steinbeck Center hosts a Day of Writing, a piece of The Steinbeck Young Authors (SYA) program created to provide students with the opportunity to explore the excitement of writing while enhancing their writing skills.  Students discover the works of John Steinbeck, focusing on the novella The Red Pony.

The event will be from 8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. at 1 Main Street in Salinas, California; the museum closes to the public in order for the students to have full use of the facility.

Ten years ago, Sylvia Panetta, the National Steinbeck Center, and the Monterey County Office of Education initiated the Steinbeck Young Authors' program with the promise to inspire the local youth with reading and writing.

The Steinbeck Young Authors' program consists of three stages: a classroom component for all students, a Day of Writing event for teacher-nominated students, and an Awards Ceremony.

SYA teachers select two students to attend a special Day of Writing at the National Steinbeck Center, where they write an essay combining their personal life experiences and their studies of The Red Pony. They are paired with a volunteer writing 'coach.'  Later on, a panel of experts judges the students' final works.

This year's award ceremony will be held at the National Steinbeck Center on Sunday, May 5, 2013 during the Annual Steinbeck Festival. All of the students' essays are published in the Gabilan Journal and available for purchase on this day.

Since it began, over 20,000 students have participated from public and private schools throughout California and beyond. Teachers report that participating students demonstrate increased confidence in their writing skills and develop a new self-image as a writer.
