  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) September 18, 2013 - The design and prototype phase is done. Now entering the building phase, the exhibition's premier is on December 14 th at the ArtLab in Trenton, NJ. Another exhibition is scheduled for March 2014 at the Gowanus Ballroom in Brooklyn, NY.

Nine suspended 4-by-5 foot LED panels are each equipped with sensor-triggered sound bytes of bird calls and machines. As viewers walk through the space, they trip the sensors, effectively creating a different sound experience dependent on the number of viewers in the exhibition space. The abstract images and morphing sound aim for the viewer to reconnect with a forgotten nuance in their memory. A panel was prototyped at a TEDxUES talk at the Bohemian National Hall on August 4.

The photographer and installation artist, Anita Giraldo, conceptualized the piece, uniting concepts and media into an integrated sensory environment-activated only upon the presence of viewers. Steel Ice and Stone is the latest of multi-media works created by the New York-based artist, and it melds the latest technology in transmitted imagery and micro-controller sound playback.

LED technology is nothing new, but thin, light-weight HD panels is, and the back-lit photographic film prints yield vibrant, high-resolution color. The embedded sound units are mini-computers with programmed instructions to react to viewers' presence in the exhibition space.

Giraldo on the concept: "Memory recall is at the heart of the piece. I was thinking about fleeting events in my life and how I could make sense of what held them together. I had to share this experience: How could I get others to feel the same way I did?

"To recreate the experience, I made photographic images of what I was sensing. I taped the sounds similar to what I heard inside and outside my head. I came up with an arrangement that would be confrontational yet allow passage through it. And, it had to interplay only with those present in that environment. By adapting visual and sound technology, I layered sensory experiences to create a surreal environment and bring dormant subtleties to the forefront".

The installation's context and progress is documented by Giraldo on its blog where topics ranging from concept process to engineering development to parallel works are discussed through weekly entries.

The Kickstarter campaign aims to fund the construction of the nine LED panels, the nine sound units and to print the images for the installation. All backers are then invited to experience the piece live, as well as receive rewards and mementos of the components of the installation itself. The prototypes-4x5 foot exhibition photographs of the images-are in the reward options, as are smaller prints, a catalog, a poster, and some of the original film images encased in acrylic.
