Staythorpe Power Station Officially Opened
Dr Jürgen Grossmann, Chief Executive Officer, RWE AG and Charles Hendry MP, Minister of State, Department of Energy and Climate Change opened the new Staythorpe Power Station at an event at the site on Monday 9 May 2011.
- (1888PressRelease) May 10, 2011 - Almost 200 people attended the event, many of whom had been directly involved in the planning, construction and operation of the new 1,650MW combined cycle gas turbine power station.
It took around three years and almost 6,000 people to construct the new power station – one of the largest and most efficient plants of its kind in Europe and the first new gas-fired power station to be constructed by RWE npower for many years.
Volker Beckers, Group Chief Executive Officer, RWE npower, said: “I’m delighted to welcome Staythorpe Power Station to our portfolio of operational sites and believe that it will play an important role in securing the UK’s future energy supplies. Many people have been involved in ensuring the successful construction of the new power station and I would like to extend my thanks to all those who have contributed over the last few years.”
The event was also attended by Patrick Kron, Chairman and CEO of Alstom – the main contractor on the project. Stephen Burgin, Country President and Head of Power for Alstom in the UK, said: "We are delighted that RWE npower chose Alstom to build this highly efficient and flexible power station, that not only meets variable power demand requirements and maintains lower levels of emissions, but also forms an important part of RWE npower's power generation portfolio in the UK. We are also pleased that Alstom will continue its partnership with RWE npower with an ongoing long term service agreement."

Staythorpe Power Station represents an investment of £650 Million for RWE npower, and complements RWE’s other low carbon technology initiatives in the UK, such as its new nuclear build programme and renewables projects. RWE has invested over £1 Billion in new energy infrastructure for the UK in each of the last three years; that amounts to over £3 invested for every £1 received by RWE npower as profit.
At full load, Staythorpe power station is able to deliver 1,650 MW of power into the National Grid, enough electricity to power around 2.8 million homes. It has created 80 long-term jobs and will add more than 10 million pounds to the local economy every year. Compared to a similar coal-fired power station, Staythorpe will produce 7.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide less each year, and it is due to Staythorpe and RWE’s other low carbon projects in the UK that the company is well on its way to achieving its target of halving its CO2 intensity in the UK by 2015 compared to 1990.
