- Orlando, FL (1888PressRelease) September 03, 2010 - Florida AFSCME Retirees endorsed Frank Wood (http://frankwood.org) in his run for the Florida House of Representatives, District 25, which includes portions of Lake, Volusia and Seminole counties.
The membership of the 10,000-member Florida AFSCME Retirees includes retired nurses, corrections officers, child care providers, emergency medical technicians and sanitation workers.
On announcing the endorsement, Tony Sceizo, Vice Chair of Political Education for AFSCME Retirees said, "We recognize the State House 25 race offers an opportunity to have a friend of working class Floridians and retirees continuing his long history of advocacy for his community. You will be a welcomed, fresh and distinguished voice in Tallahassee."
Wood, a 30-year veteran Economics teacher at Mount Dora High School, said he was honored by the endorsement.
"I stand with working families to build a brighter future for all Floridians," he said. "Our life-experienced retired neighbors and friends - who pay taxes, own homes, raised families, started businesses and worked over a lifetime to serve our communities - are a force we can enlist to help build a more prosperous Sunshine State."
Wood, a former Lake County Teacher of the Year and holder of the prestigious National Board of Professional Teaching Standards certification, has been urged for years to run for the legislative seat.
Wood shares credit for his campaign's accelerating momentum with the "can-do spirit" of his volunteers and a growing base of voters from both parties and all walks of life, including an army of retirees, who believe state government needs more common sense.
Wood believes voters are ready for genuine change in Tallahassee. "More and more people believe government should be practical and useful, rather than bureaucratic and self-serving."
