  • (1888PressRelease) December 08, 2017 - What do you do if the ideals of diplomacy and human rights run in your blood? Apparently, you write an essay to the United Nations! St. Jude’s Academy senior, Awa Darboe, comes from a family of diplomats, “My grand-father, father and aunt are all involved in diplomacy,” says Awa. She said that growing up in an environment where human rights are so highly esteemed has made her passionate about the topic herself.

Recently, she was made aware of an opportunity to earn a trip to New York City to attend the United Nations Youth Summit. But in order to earn a spot at this prestigious event she had to write a short essay to convince the selection committee to choose her. She wrote about sustainable development, and obviously convinced them very well. Not only did she get selected to attend the Youth Summit, but Awa is very excited about the fact that she also gets to participate in a live United Nations session as well. The events take place over three days from February 14 to 16, 2018.

This will not be Awa’s first trip to New York. In fact, she and her family used to live only a short drive away from the city. But this will be her first visit to the United Nations. Awa is very excited about this opportunity, mainly because she’s highly motivated when it comes to issues of diplomacy and human rights. One of her life goals is to one day work at the United Nations. When asked if her relatives used their influence to help her get selected for this honour she laughed and responded with, “I wish! My family didn’t even know that I was applying for the opportunity to attend.” Her father has since gotten involved with helping Awa prepare for her big trip.

Awa’s diplomatic family aren’t the only ones who are feeling proud of her accomplishments; her school family at St. Jude’s Academy are excited and proud of Awa for her initiative and success in pursuing her passion. We look forward to seeing fine young women like her chasing her dream of making the world a better place.
