Spurning Commercialization of Halloween, Old-Fashioned Halloween Celebration planned for Clearwater
Nostaglia for Halloween and the "good old days" is the inspiration behind a retro Halloween celebration.
- Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL (1888PressRelease) October 13, 2023 - With retail sales for this Halloween predicted to reach $12.2 billion, those looking for a simpler way to celebrate the holiday are invited to attend a Halloween Celebration hosted by the Church of Scientology. The event, which will take place on Sunday, October 29, includes refreshments and an old-time radio-style performance of The Death Flyer by L. Ron Hubbard.
The event, which is being held in the Fort Harrison’s Crystal Ballroom begins at 1:30 PM, and there is no cost to attend.
"Halloween can have a very nostalgic feeling to it," said Lisa Mansell from the Public Affairs Department of the Church of Scientology Flag Service Organization. "Thus, we are offering an old-fashioned Halloween celebration. An old-time live radio show just makes it all that more special."
The L. Ron Hubbard East Coast Theatre, a volunteer group founded in 2011, will perform The Death Flyer.
"A 1947 survey found that 82 out of 100 Americans were radio listeners," said Joanie Sigal, the producer of the theater. "It is a part of our cultural fabric. Thrillers and suspense were very popular, and we are excited to bring this style of entertainment to the community."
L. Ron Hubbard was among the most prolific and popular writers of the 20th century. Between 1934 and 1940, some 140 of L. Ron Hubbard's tales appeared in the pages of pulp magazines—as many as three titles an issue and bylined under some fifteen pen names.
The Death Flyer was initially published in 1936. The story carries forward the urban legend of the ghost train – trains that relive their fatal voyage again and again. In this case, a surveyor in northern Maine finds himself as a passenger on a train that crashed ten years prior.
The catered reception begins at 1:30 PM, with the show starting at 2:15 PM.
"Guests are encouraged to attend in costume," said Ms. Mansell, "though business casual or 'Halloween Festive' will certainly suit. We want our guests to feel that they are experiencing a wholesome Halloween, reminiscent of days gone by."
The Fort Harrison is located at 210 S. Fort Harrison Ave. For more information about the event or to RSVP for the show, please call (727-467-6860. Guests must RSVP to attend.
