SPORTS 'N SPOKES Magazine Teams Up With UroMed & Wheel:Life for 2013 Get Out, Enjoy Life Event
SPORTS 'N SPOKES, the sports and recreation magazine of the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), has teamed up with UroMed's nonprofit program Life After Spinal Cord Injury (LASCI) and the online community, Wheel:Life, to encourage people with disabilities to "Get Out & Enjoy Life This Summer".
- Albany, GA (1888PressRelease) July 13, 2013 - Beginning July 15, the SPORTS 'N SPOKES website will feature a state-by-state listing of accessible vacation spots, outdoors programs, and other events.
This year's GOEL theme centers on Extreme Sports, and the program will spotlight activities like wheelchair rugby, accessible amusement parks, assistive scuba diving and other unique outings. View the full program details at: http://pvamag.com/sns/article/5661/get_out_enjoy_life_2013
According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center, nearly 265,000 Americans are living with spinal-cord injury today. Most (81%) are male, and about half the injuries (56%) occur in people who are ages 16 to 30. Less than 1% of people with spinal-cord injuries (SCI) experience full recovery. The Get Out, Enjoy Life event is meant to encourage people who use wheelchairs to pursue a full and active life after their injury or diagnosis.
"As a quadriplegic, I understand the role that personal independence combined with community support plays in achieving a full, successful life after spinal-cord injury," LASCI founder Bert Burns says. "The best part of this program is that we are encouraging SCI survivors to get out and enjoy life while giving them a list of ways they can do so more easily. Having a place to start makes all the difference when moving beyond a life-changing injury."
