SpectraCell Adds Manganese to its Micronutrient Panel
SpectraCell Laboratories has added the mineral manganese to its micronutrient test (MNT), which identifies nutritional deficiencies in people. Manganese is a trace element that helps the body fight oxidative stress.
- (1888PressRelease) March 31, 2012 - Effectively immediately, SpectraCell Laboratories has added the mineral manganese to its list of nutrients measured by its flagship micronutrient test (MNT), which identifies nutritional deficiencies in people. The MNT now contains 35 separate components, including several vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and metabolites that are necessary for human health.
Manganese is a trace element that helps the body fight oxidative stress. Specifically, manganese is a cofactor for the powerful antioxidant called superoxide dismutase, which has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Manganese can also be a toxic element, causing neurological symptoms if overdosed. Since the difference between a normal and toxic dose is quite narrow, determining functional manganese status prior to supplementation is crucial.
It is estimated that 20% of Americans are deficient in manganese, which is required for bone development and synthesis of cartilage. A deficiency in manganese may cause bone and joint problems. Deficiency symptoms also include impaired glucose tolerance, infertility, cramping and dizziness.
"We are constantly looking to add nutrients to the micronutrient panel, and also make our test easier to use in clinical practice." states Dr. Fred Crawford, PhD, Vice President and Director of Operations for SpectraCell Laboratories. "Since our test is a functional measure of nutrition, this means it doesn't just tell you how much mangnaese you have in your body, for example, but it will tell you whether or not your body is able to actually use, transport or absorb it. It's much more relevant than a static measure such as that seen with conventional serum testing. "
Also effective immediately, SpectraCell Laboratories will identify borderline deficiencies on its report. Actual deficiencies are conveniently listed on the first page of the MNT report, but in many cases, a person who is not outright deficient in a nutrient may be approaching deficiency and thus considered to be borderline deficient. For each of the over 30 nutrients tested, an easy-to-read graph is shown that will contain a "yellow caution zone" for any borderline deficiencies.
SpectraCell's micronutrient test, which now includes manganese, retails for $370 and includes a panel of 35 antioxidants, vitamins and minerals . It does not need to be ordered by a doctor unless the patient plans to submit it to insurance. It is a simple blood test and takes about two weeks to receive results. Over 3500 doctors currently use SpectraCell's micronutrient test in their practice. More information on ordering micronutrient testing can be found at www.spectracell.com.
About SpectraCell Laboratories - SpectraCell is a CLIA accredited laboratory that offers advanced clinical testing to healthcare providers nationwide. SpectraCell's diagnostic testing is relevant for both prevention as well as the treatment and management of disease since it offers cellular nutritional analysis, cardiovascular diagnostics, and genetic testing.
SpectraCell's micronutrient testing is a comprehensive assessment of a patient's nutritional status at the cellular level. Unlike traditional serum, hair and urine tests, SpectraCell's micronutrient testing measures how an individual's white blood cells function in specific nutritional environments. 35 vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants are evaluated. As a result, individual differences in metabolism, age, genetics, health, prescription drug usage, absorption rate and other factors are taken into consideration.
