SpectraCell Adds Manganese to its Micronutrient Panel

- (1888PressRelease) March 31, 2012 - Effectively immediately, SpectraCell Laboratories has added the mineral manganese to its list of nutrients measured by its flagship micronutrient test (MNT), which identifies nutritional deficiencies in people. The MNT now contains 35 separate components, including several vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and metabolites that are necessary for human health.
Manganese is a trace element that helps the body fight oxidative stress. Specifically, manganese is a cofactor for the powerful antioxidant called superoxide dismutase, which has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Manganese can also be a toxic element, causing neurological symptoms if overdosed. Since the difference between a normal and toxic dose is quite narrow, determining functional manganese status prior to supplementation is crucial.
It is estimated that 20% of Americans are deficient in manganese, which is required for bone development and synthesis of cartilage. A deficiency in manganese may cause bone and joint problems. Deficiency symptoms also include impaired glucose tolerance, infertility, cramping and dizziness.

For each of the over 30 nutrients tested, an easy-to-read graph is shown that will contain a "yellow caution zone" for any borderline deficiencies.
