Spanish Publishing Sector at the London Book Fair
Some 32 Spanish companies took part in this event, headed by the Federation of Spanish Publishers' Guilds.
- (1888PressRelease) April 24, 2013 - Spanish publishing firms had a notable presence at the 42nd edition of the London Book Fair, all of them aiming to boost sales of products from the Spanish publishing sector and increase the presence of Spanish books in the European market. This event, held at London's Earl's Court exhibition venue and attended by around 1,000 exhibitors from 57 countries, is exclusively professional and dedicated to negotiation of publishing rights.
Spanish companies, book sellers, librarians, authors and suppliers all had the chance to explore business opportunities and negotiate agreements on their titles with the more than 16,000 professionals who visited the fair, 40% of whom were international. The annual sales value of Spanish publishing rights is estimated at around €180 million, according to figures released by the Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade (ICEX). Data from the 2011 Foreign Book Trade Report show that, of this amount, €18 million came from the United Kingdom.
According to ISBN statistics, the number of translated books from the catalogues of Spanish publishing houses published in the United Kingdom rose by 45% in 2011 with respect to 2010, reaching a total of 117 titles, 44% of which were fiction. These figures are particularly impressive in the British market, which is hard to break into, and where only 3% of all books published are translations.
ICEX also offers Spanish publishing houses the New Spanish Books rights sales portal, with its upcoming selection of titles to be published on its website in July 2013.
