South Korea Enforces Updates to Safety Standards for Household Products
South Korea updated its safety standards for household goods under the Electric Appliances and Household Goods Safety Management Act in July 2018.
- (1888PressRelease) January 18, 2019 - In South Korea, the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) has enacted Notification No.2018-195, dated June 29, 2018, thereby updating 23 annexes to Article 28 of the Electric Appliances and Household Goods Safety Management Act. Manufacturers and suppliers of household goods are therefore advised to check their products comply with the latest safety standard requirements.
Softline stakeholders should be aware the updated annexes include:
• Annex 1 – Household Textile Products
• Annex 2 - Carpet
• Annex 3 – Leather Goods
• Annex 10 – Shoes for the elderly
• Annex 16 – Reflective Safety Vest
• Annex 22 – Contact Metal Ornaments
The enforcement rules covering safety standards must be applied to household goods that fall under the scope of the list. However, the requirement for a safety certification/safety confirmation/supplier conformity report will be exempted when the product is subject to the same requirements during importation through parallel import (product produced or distributed by an overseas trademark owner for sale purpose).
The enforcement rules also state that labeling must be in Korean, unless displaying the manufacturer’s name and model in Korean is difficult. In this case, English can be used.
KATS Notification No. 2018-195 was enforced on July 1, 2018.
