South Africa's Cyberspace Administrator Celebrates Women
The ZA Central Registry (ZACR) has congratulated Board member Xoliswa Kakana following her successful summiting of Mount Kilimanjaro.
- (1888PressRelease) August 18, 2018 - The ZA Central Registry (ZACR) NPC, the administrator of South Africa’s .ZA presence on the worldwide web, has extended its congratulations to Board Member Xoliswa Kakana on her recent successful summiting of Mount Kilimanjaro as part of the Trek4Mandela team.
“Xoliswa’s endeavour as a ZACR Non-Executive Director in the run-up to Women’s Month helps illustrate the tremendous achievements of the many women leading South Africa’s ICT sector. Not content to help steer the .ZA domain towards its bright future, Xoliswa further took it upon herself to do her bit for the Trek4Mandela initiative by summiting Africa’s tallest mountain,” said Lucky Masilela, CEO of ZACR NPC.
Key to the Trek4Mandela initiative is the Caring4Girls campaign that aims to keep a girl child in school by supplying them with sanitary towels. ZACR NPC has pledged to support 100 girls through the Caring4Girls initiative to ensure they have access to proper, decent sanitary towels every month for three years.
An ICT industry veteran with 25-year’s in the industry, Ms. Kakana is a previous recipient of the Women in Technology award, was a finalist in the Telecommunications Business Woman Awards 2011 and a finalist in the Business Woman of the Year Award 2012. She is an Electrical Engineer by profession and founded the successful ICT-Works company in 1999.
Her support for the Trek4Mandela initiative and its aims of girl child empowerment is in line with her stated interest in directing the evolution of the greater ICT industry towards the development of women.
“Both Xoliswa and ZACR recognise the potential ICT has for realising a better life for the millions of African women who remain on the sidelines two decades after the transition to democracy that was supposed to give everybody a voice,” said Mr Masilela.
“We congratulate Xoliswa and all South African women who every day summit their own personal Mount Kilimanjaros,” Mr Masilela added.
The ZA Central Registry (ZACR) NPC is a pioneer of the local domain name space and last month celebrated 30 years of being responsible for the technical and administrative wellbeing of the entire South African presence on the worldwide web.
Furthemore, 69% of the staff who work at ZACR are female. They help keep over 1.2 million CO.ZA second-level domains accessible and running smoothly, as well as the many web.za, org.za and net.za domains. The women who work at ZACR can justly celebrate the fact that SA’s central registry has never once experienced a single day of downtime due to the failure of any of its very highly regarded systems.
The ZACR’s subsidiary, Registry Africa is also the administrator of the dotAfrica (.africa) geographic Top Level Domain (gTLD) which has over 17 000 domain name registrations and is already making a significant positive impact on Africa’s presence in cyberspace.
While the whole of the month of August now annually commemorates women, in South Africa Women's Day on 9 August specifically commemorates the courageous struggles waged by the women of 1956. On 9 August 1956, over 20 000 women took a bold stance against the ruthless apartheid regime's unjust laws. Today, we know this occasion as the “Women’s March” and remember it as one of the key moments that helped unravel apartheid.
