Smart Tweezers ST5: Surface Mount Technology Specific LCR-Meter
Automatic LCR- and ESR-Meter, Diode and Continuity Tester for Electronic Components Combined With High Precision Tweezers.
- (1888PressRelease) August 25, 2012 - Siborg Systems Inc releases newest model of the world renown Smart Tweezers, an exciting answer to problems with testing and trouble-shooting Surface Mount Devices with a traditional LCR-meter.
Surface Mount Technology (SMT) is the leading approach when building electronic equipment, such as printed circuit boards (PCB). Surface Mount Devices (SMD) are the tiny components that are mounted directly to the PCB, this technology is replacing traditional 'through-hole' components in which wire leads were threaded through holes on a PCB. Both types of SMDs can be found on many PCBs, thus many components not suited to surface mount, such as heat-sinked power semiconductor devices and transformers, can be placed on the PCB.
SMT components are generally tiny and can or can not have wire leads. The tiny size of these components proves labelling difficult, making it problematic to keep track of their values and identification.
Smart Tweezers change all that. Easily held in one hand, the lightweight device automatically evaluates all passive types of SMT components, such as Resistors, Capacitances, and Inductances.
The LCR-meter featured in Smart Tweezers can automatically determine the type of component, resistor capacitor, or inductor, and provides the highest accuracy measurement by automatically switching to the best range and test signal frequency for the component. A small display on the handle of Smart Tweezers relays the measurements from the LCR-meter, as well as the component type and test conditions used.
"The main advantage of Smart Tweezers is virtually instantaneous and highly accurate evaluation of SMT components as small as 0.3 mm," says Michael Obrecht, R&D director at SIborg. "This accuracy level of about 0.2% is only available from expensive bench-type LCR-meters that require significant efforts in setting-up the measurements."
The high precision tweezer tips act as the probe for Smart Tweezers' LCR-meter. Designed for a production line component evaluation, on-board impedance testing, and SMD component sorting. Especially suitable for identifying unrecognizable SMD components, Smart Tweezers features an automatic component recognition measurement mode for L, C and R depending on the type of component identified.
Smart Tweezers are a time and cost-effective tool with fully-automatic LCR-measurements, including automatically changing the measurement modes (L, C or R) and the range of measurement. These features allow the user to focus more on the component being tested.
The screen on Smart Tweezers' LCR-meter is broken into 2 parts. The primary display, the largest, shows the main impedance readings. The secondary display, the top, displays the present reading of additional parameters (such as parasitic resistance) and measurement. For example; the device will show the capacitor value in the primary display, and the ESR value is shown in the secondary display. A Bar Graph across the bottom provides an analog indication of the measured input. The display generally shows a 5 digit reading for most functions.
Smart Tweezers also acts as a diode and continuity tester, and can warn a sound when readings are below threshold or to signify a momentary open circuit.
Smart Tweezers offers a significantly higher accuracy and more features than present-day rivals. It is unparalleled for offering Inductance measurements:
-Automatic LCR, and Equivalent Series Resistance Measurements
-Basic accuracy of 0.2%
-Li-Ion battery, USB charger
-Diode and Continuity tests
-Adjustable test signals
-Component Sorting with 1%, 5%, 10% and 20% Tolerance
-Semi-automatic Offset Subtraction
-Ideal for small components, as small as 0201 size (about 0.3 mm)
-Displays active and reactive impedance components
-Just 2 Oz. weight and ergonomic design
-Long battery life
"If you do any work on a PCB, Smart Tweezers, once used, become indispensable," says Obrecht at Siborg. "Users say: 'I don't use them every day, or even every week. But when I need them, I really need them!'"
