SK&A Announces Update to Physician Move-Rate Trends
Ongoing four-year study shows an average of 14.2 percent of physicians move, retire or make other changes each year.
- (1888PressRelease) May 24, 2011 - IRVINE, CA - SK&A, A Cegedim Company, a leading provider of healthcare information solutions and research, today released an update to its "Physicians on the Move" report, which reveals the turnover rate of office-based physicians to its OneKey, Powered by SK&A database of healthcare providers. According to the report, the four-year average of physicians who moved to a new location, retired or passed away was 14.2 percent. The move rate for 2011 was 11.3 percent, a one-percent drop from the prior year.
In the four years since SK&A began the study, the average annual change rate has fallen from 18.2 percent to 11.3 percent for the current period. The decline indicates continued stability among practicing physicians. Like other business professionals, doctors are staying put in their jobs as the economy continues to gain momentum from the lows of the recent recession. Even so, certain specialists such as hematologists (24.5%) and hepatologists (18%) continue to have high change rates, while plastic surgeons (6.3%) and podiatrists (6.9%) have historically low change rates.

To determine the current move rate, the SK&A Research Center telephone-surveyed 253,000 U.S. medical offices representing approximately 664,600 doctors between March 2010 and March 2011. The report identifies 86 physician specialties, which are listed alphabetically with their annualized change rates for 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. SK&A also captured the move rate for mid-level practitioners such as NPs and PAs, and other medical office personnel.
As highly educated, busy prescribers who are involved in all aspects of practice management, physician assistants and nurse practitioners are becoming more influential in patient care. The move rate for these professionals has fallen dramatically in the last year. From 2010 to 2011, the the NP move rate dropped from 19.9 percent to 14 percent, and the PA move rate fell to 15.6 percent from 20.8 percent. The database offers more than 112,400 of these professionals, segmented by specialty and other variables.
