  • Phoenix-Mesa, AZ (1888PressRelease) March 26, 2015 - Sisters on the Fly continues in their unique efforts to empower and inspire women to engage with the outdoors and each other through classic Americana adventures. On May 12 Sisters on the Fly (SOTF), the largest women's outdoors group in the country, will embark on a cross-country trek across the entire length of historic Route 66. Kicking off in Joliet, Ill., a group of more than 300 members will take this famous right of passage with hundreds more joining up at planned stops in 11 cities. The journey will culminate in a celebration at their final stop in Ventura, Calif. on June 2 where the Sisters will converge at the Pacific coast.

Founded in 1999 by real-life sisters, Maurrie Sussman and Rebecca Clarke, Sisters on the Fly has grown to nearly 6,000 members across the country and internationally, who have connected through their shared affinity for the outdoors, fly fishing, camping and, most importantly, fun.

Since the start, many of the Sisters have famously renovated and decorated vintage trailers, which they use to caravan to/from many of the group's planned activities. While not a requirement, the vintage trailer caravans have become one of the SOTF trademarks and the Route 66 journey is no exception. More than 300 Sisters will tow and display their vintage trailers on portions of or the entire journey and will spend one to two nights in each city, taking in the sites and attractions of each while visiting with other Sisters and followers who stop by to say hello along the way.

The schedule for the month long trip includes:
    • May 12-13- Joliet, Ill.
    • May 14-15- Springfield, Ill.
    • May 16-17- St. Louis, Mo.
    • May 18-19- Springfield, Mo.
    • May 20- Kansas (city TBD)
    • May 20-21- Claremore, Okla.
    • May 22-23- Oklahoma City, Okla.
    • May 24-25- Amarillo, Texas
    • May 26-31- New Mexico and Arizona (cities TBD)
    • June 1- Barstow, Calif.
    • June 2-5- Ventura, Calif.

"This trip has been on our bucket list of adventures for many years," said Maurrie Sussman, Sister #1 and co-founder of Sisters on the Fly. "Traveling with a group this size is a once in a lifetime experience and we are so excited about the participation, enthusiasm and hard work that our Sisters have put into making it a reality."

One of the Sisters who will participate in the full trek is Lisa Mora, Sister #2348. Originally from Australia, Lisa recently moved to Oregon and will be driving her 1953 Hudson Hornet with a 1956 Mercury trailer in tow. Lisa is a vintage trailer enthusiast and publisher/editor of Vintage Caravan Magazine. At the end of the tour, Lisa will give away the trailer used during the tour to a Vintage Caravan Magazine subscriber.
