Sirens in Surround Sound - Improvisational Harpists Give Music Lovers a Lush Musical Experience on November 26th in NYC
Progressive harpist Mia Theodoratus brings together special guests to surround the historical Theatre 80 on St. Marks with the pure unamplified tones of 2 Harps, 2 Marimbas and a prepared Celeste for Sirens of Surround Sound on Nov. 26th.
- New York, NY (1888PressRelease) November 24, 2012 - On November 26th rock harpist Mia Theodoratus brings together special guests to surround New York's historical, Theatre 80 with the pure unamplified tones of two Concert grand harps, four full sized vintage rosewood marimbas, a prepared Celeste and various other mallet instruments for Sirens in Surround Sound.
For the show, Mia will be joined by her mentor, celebrated harpist and improviser Susan Allen, who is making a rare East Coast for the performance. Mia also welcomes her favorite NYC composers and improvisors Michael Evans, Lary 7 and Masami Tomihisa.
Sirens in Surround Sound is a unique encounter and musical dialog created to musically tell tonal stories, trade treasured riffs and take a journey to see how a mentor and student have grown on their separate paths.
Over a decade ago Mia Theodoratus studied harp with Susan Allen at California Institute of the Arts. Susan's best performance advice was to "figure it out" when Mia played the famed Berio Sequennza for Harp.
Since meeting at CALARTS both have had rich musical paths. Susan has performed and improvised all over the world, including such remote locales as Novosibirsk, Siberia, and Beijing, China, along the trans-Siberian railroad. She earned a PhD in her 50s from Schools on Borders, and is finishing a book "Passage of Desire: Improvisation and the Human Journey".
Mia has played iconic New York rock venues such as CBGBs, Coney Island High, the Cooler and Mercury Lounge as well as having been invited to play for President Obama. She's also composed music for HBO's Flight of the Concords, AMC's Rubicon and Bravo's Million Dollar Listing. Mia's many shows with jazz and rock bands throughout NYC has also lead to performances in Shanghai, Vienna, and the Acropolis in Athens, Greece.
Sirens in Surround Sound takes place on Monday, November 26th; 7PM ET at Theatre 80 (80 St. Marks Place, NYC).
