Singapore Attracts More Tourists for Seven Straight Months
The country's tourist arrivals have posted a 26.7 percent growth in June, the seventh consecutive month of record-high foreign influx.
- (1888PressRelease) September 07, 2010 - According to a government report, the city-state has attracted more than 950,000 foreign tourists in June alone, resulting to a 5 percent retail sales growth during this month and nearly 18 percent economic growth in the first half of the year.
Meanwhile, the government said the top five visitor-generating markets were Indonesia with 214,000, Malaysia with 93,000, India with 83,000, Australia with 75,000, and China with 69,000 visitors.
These countries accounted for about 56 percent of the total visitor influx in June while 14 out of the 15 top markets have registered a positive year-on-year growth for the month.
China has posted the highest growth during the month with 65.8 percent increase followed by Malaysia with 51.3 percent, and Hong Kong with 48.2 percent.
In an effort to boost the country's tourism industry, the government has lifted a 40-year ban on gambling business in 2005 and has allowed the opening of two casino resorts run by Genting Singapore Plc. and Las Vegas Corp.
Aside from allowing casinos to operate in the country, the government has also allowed foreign businessmen to form a Singapore company(http://www.rikvin.com/incorporation-fees/) even if this is 100 percent foreign-owned enterprise, a move which has also contributed to the tourism growth.
