    THE NAME
The name Simplissimus comes from Simplicissimus, a German illustrated literary journal founded in Münich by Albert Langen in 1896. It quickly gained a strong reputation not only for the quality of its literature-featuring such writers as Rilke, Schnitzler, and Thomas Mann-but also for its satirical artwork. It combined brash and politically daring content, with a bright, immediate, and surprisingly modern graphic style. Its most reliable targets for caricature were stiff Prussian military figures, and rigid German social and class distinctions as seen from the more relaxed, liberal atmosphere of Munich. The magazine's biting humor soon earned it a notoriety, and the magazine was viewed officially as immoral, revolutionary and socialistic. For more information visit www.simplissimus.net
