SIMCinema 2011 unfurls the 'New Wave' as it explores the virtue of form and the frame
From a celebration of the auras of local and global cinematic darlings, to the lingering question of orginiality; from the firebrand flames of the woman as the watershed of these waves, to the rise of the individual and individualistic filmmaker, SIMCinema 2011 will act as a platform for the past to segue into the future with the face of the present.
- (1888PressRelease) December 14, 2011 - And the Wave swells
An acknowledgement of the sublime saga, a mélange of triviality and sobriety, a celebration of the spirit that eschews the weather-beaten path, a quest for the verity that is in between art and life, a confluence that kindles the embers of artistry and envisions the imminent in the present - SIMCinema 2011 unfurls the 'New Wave' as it explores the virtue of form and the frame.
To be hosted on the 14th, 15th and 16th of December, the second edition of the annual student film festival of Symbiosis Institution of Media and Communication (SIMC) is a venture in collaboration with the Pune chapter of Alliance Francais. With a befitting theme in 'New Wave', Alliance Francais and SIMC, with their distinct identities, seek to showcase the oeuvre of the French silver screen, unearth new perspectives and redefine the language of culture and cinema.
The three day spectacle features renowned guests from the film and entertainment industry, panel discussions that dwell on the essence of cinema and its contemporary nature, film screenings that offer a delectable fare of illusion and a number of events that ride the wave of creativity.
Paying homage to the lauded face of the Indian New Wave, Smita Patil, is an exclusive retrospective that begins with an exchange on Fire and Water: Woman as the New Wave that prospects the rise of the woman as a force to reckon with in cinema scope. Shyam Benegal's Bhumika and Ketan Mehta's Mirch Masala will be presented as tribute to the blazing talent.
A discussion on the convergence of indigenous and global cinema holds in perspective the infusions and conflicts between the two fraternities. The symposium on India's New Wave takes stock of the independent film movement in today's India and aims to chart its potential to transcend cultures with a sensibility of its own.
Bringing magic on reel to the venue on the first day are the animated storyboards of Sylvian Chomet's L'Illusioniste and Raining Cats and Frogs by Jacques-Remy Girerd. While L'Illusioniste narrates the adventures of an unemployed French illusionist and a young woman he meets in Scotland, Girerd pictures the story of a modern day Noah and his brood battling against supernatural elements with Alain Resnais' Private Fears in Public Spaces telling the archetypal tale of love and its labour.
Innovation and novelty will be at the fore across the three days as participants compete in varied events like film review; poster and montage making; documentary, experimental and animation short film competitions. The flagship event of SIMCinema, the 24 hour film making event, ensures that cinema is, beyond any doubt, larger than life and there's lot more than the 24 frames that meet the eye.
