Silver outperforms other precious metals, making a strong start to the year.
(1888PressRelease) February 01, 2012 - MIAMI, FL - Silver has shown the best performance of all the precious metals during January, surging 22% from its December low. Having suffered during the latter part of 2011, silver now seems poised for a strong recovery, particularly as renewed optimism from the euro zone fuels both investor and industrial confidence.
Silver sees approximately 50% of its demand coming from industry where it is used in myriad applications, particularly in electronics. Silver is used in electric contacts and conductors, as a catalyst in chemical reactions, as a natural micro-biocide, and in high-end audio equipment. It is also found in batteries and in photographic film and is used by the medical and dental industries in addition to jewelry making, ornaments and tableware. Investment demand accounts for the remaining 50%; silver offers investors a more accessible entry point into the market, trading at approximately 1/50 the price of gold.
"The supply surplus for silver is declining as industrial demand is stepped up," says Bill Hionas, CEO of Pan American Metals of Miami. "As demand continues, the market will reflect this and we will see silver go even higher. Silver bullion and coins are currently in considerable demand; silver has made the strongest start to a new year since 1983."
