- (1888PressRelease) November 28, 2012 - Sherway Gardens' current Gallery in the Garden exhibit entitled Progressions II showcases landscape paintings produced at the McMichael Gallery in Kleinburg under the guidance of faculty from the Haliburton School of the Arts: Fleming College. Artists included in the exhibition are Esther Abiscott, Sue Archibald, Susan Dain, Lorraine Darke, Diane Gartlan, Kathleen Haushalter, John Leonard, Susan McCreesh, Eileen Menzel, Cheryl Mount, Victoria Pearce, Morris Piccone, Taimi Poldmaa, Pam Pols, Joe Rich, Harold Wierenga, Janice Ykema, and Renee Ziegenfuss. The exhibit is on display until January 5, 2013 in the corridor at door 3. For more information call 416-621-1070 or visit www.sherwaygardens.ca.
In Progressions II, John Leonard, AOCA, RCA, and his advanced studies students have created a body of work that reflects a passion for painting and pays homage to the work of the Group of Seven, who advanced Canadian art and played a prominent role as advocates for the importance of art education during a defining epoch in our nation's history.
These landscapes celebrate the commitment of these artists. Like A.Y. Jackson, they understand the importance of expressing, "in paint, the spirit of our country." Like J.E.H. MacDonald, they have engaged in a "courageous experiment [which] is not only legitimate but vital to the development of a living Canadian art."
These paintings, all created in the fall of 2012, have been assembled for a touring exhibition that will visit cities across the province for the next two years, in the footsteps of the 2009-2010 Progression touring exhibition that travelled Ontario from Kleinburg to Sault Ste Marie and from there to Etobicoke, Goodwood and Haliburton.
