  • (1888PressRelease) March 15, 2013 - Sherway Gardens' (Hwy 427 & the QEW) current Gallery in the Garden exhibit entitled Mosaic Memories features sculptures by Toronto porcelain and ceramic artist Heather Kritzinger, who uses bits and pieces of everyday household items that tug at our memories to create unique exquisite art that lets us see fragments of our past in a new way. The exhibit is on display until April 6 in the corridor at door 3. For more information call 416-621-1070 or visit www.sherwaygardens.ca.

Heather's love of porcelain and china drew her into upcycling broken and discarded dishes and figurines, to preserve those small bits of colour and art in new creations. As the objects that are mosaicked are also 'found objects', Heather's artworks are, on another level, a statement against the materialism and waste in our society.

Pique Assiette is a style of mosaic that incorporates pieces of broken ceramics-plates, dishes, cups, tiles-and other found objects into the design. The appeal and expressiveness of pique assiette lies in the ideas of lateral thinking, humour, recycling, and the significance of the found objects. It is sometimes known by the Catlan name of 'Trencadís'.
