Sherri Harris Allgood sworn in as Troy NC first black female mayor
Troy has elected Sherri Harris Allgood to become the town's first African-American woman mayor. It was a close election with Allgood defeating the incumbent mayor of 38 years.

Allgood made history when she was sworn into office into the town that is looking to overturn stagnation and economic distress.
Allgood took the oath on the evening of December 03, 2018 inside the Troy Town Hall in a public ceremony before a crowded room of Montgomery County citizens, family members, and spectators. Afterward, she met with well-wishers for a celebratory reception where she talked about her journey to the office and took photos with family and friends.
Allgood said in a news release, "I was told they are not going to let you win. See, you cannot say things like that to Sherri Allgood. The way my mind is set up, when you tell me what I cannot do, I like to show you what God can do."
Her path to the mayor's office culminated with a victory over 19-term incumbent Roy Maness who occupied the position for 38 years.
"This election was not a walk in the park. We are the county seat. We set the stage for the rest of the county. To dare run as a mayor in Troy, NC took an inner strength that’s beyond me." Allgood reflected on her campaign and her epic run. "That inner strength comes from God and is fueled by my desire to see change in Troy for the benefit of the people."
Allgood has never held a political office but she did run for mayor of Troy three years ago in 2015. As a write-in candidate, her loss by only 114 votes planted seeds of optimism for her to pursue the mayor's seat again in 2018.
Allgood is committed to ensuring that the impoverished citizens and the youth receive the opportunities they need to advance. The lack of opportunity in Montgomery County is causing many rural residents and young citizens to leave. The workforce is poorly positioned to compete in a high-tech and progressive economy. Allgood is focused on creating innovative projects that mitigate the symptoms associated with the decline of rural areas like Troy. This includes loss of community services and programs along with a dependent, aging population. Her vision and clear picture of a revitalized Troy generates hope and will align civic energy toward a common destiny.
