Sheriffs Department Honored for Mobile Data Communications Deployment
Yavapai County Sheriff's recognized for enabling deputies to access critical data while patrolling in remote areas.
- (1888PressRelease) December 16, 2011 - St. George, Utah - The Yavapai County (Arizona) Sheriff's Office (YCSO) has been honored by Mobile Enterprise magazine for upgrading mobile wireless data communications in more than 120 patrol vehicles. The department installed systems made by Wilson Electronics, manufacturer of North America's top-selling line of cellular signal boosters.
YCSO was recently named an honorable mention in the Best in Enterprise-Wide Mobility Deployment category of the publication's annual Mobilizer Awards for 2011. The Mobilizer Awards honor public and private enterprises across all industry sectors that have transformed their businesses by deploying mobile and wireless solutions.
The Wilson signal boosters enable deputies to use on-board computers and cellular modems to access the department's computer network and locate needed information or file reports directly from their patrol vehicles, even in remote areas of the mostly rural county.

Yavapai County covers 8,100 square miles lying between suburban Phoenix and the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Topography includes Sonoran desert and mountains rising nearly 8,000 feet.
Before the Wilson boosters were installed, deputies took handwritten notes during investigations and then drove to the nearest substation, often 80 or 100 miles away, to log into the computer system.
Field testing confirmed that the cellular signal in many areas of the county was too weak to allow in-vehicle modems to reliably connect with the department's computer system. To solve that problem the department installed Wilson boosters and antennas to detect and amplify faint cellular signals.
The payoff was clear and immediate. Deputies' response time to citizen calls was cut significantly. Also, search and rescue operations were able to able to stay in contact with the YCSO communications center through email and instant messaging even when radio and cellular voice communications were not available.
"Without the Wilson boosters there would be no mobile data communications project," said Lt. Brian Hunt, the Technical Services Bureau commander for the YCSO. "We knew from testing that wireless modems alone would not work. We made the project successful with Wilson."
