Shelley Brian Brown is an employment lawyer, specializing in employment law and employment related human rights law at Steinberg Title Hope & Israel LLP in Toronto. Prior to joining Steinberg Title he was legal counsel at the Prudential Insurance Company of America in Canada. Labor laws that cover all facets of the rights and duties of employers, labor unions and employees have always been different in each jurisdiction.
In the United States, unions represent less than seven percent of the private sector workforce, while in Canada, private sector unionization approaches 20% . Furthermore, labor and employment issues for most Canadian companies are mostly addressed at the provincial level rather than under national, federal law. That means that while Canadian labor laws are often seen as more 'union friendly', the actual rules vary from one province to another.
