Shawmut Communications Group Becomes the first SGP-Certified Printer in Massachusetts
The print and marketing company with two locations in Massachusetts was recently certified by the Sustainable Green Printing Partnership (SGP), the Gold Standard in Sustainability for Printers.
- Boston, MA-NH (1888PressRelease) October 15, 2019 - Shawmut Communications Group is pleased to announce that the organization has achieved SGP certification and become the first printer in Massachusetts to certified by the Sustainable Green Printing Partnership (SGP), a non-profit accreditation organization promoting sustainability in all printing processes throughout the United States and Canada. SGP-certified facilities must meet all environmental, health, and safety regulations, create a sustainability management system, adopt and measure a continuous improvement project annually, and pass recertification audits every two years.
“We’re delighted to be the first SGP-certified printing facility in Massachusetts,” says Michael Peluso, President of Shawmut. “Our new sustainability management system will enable Shawmut to meet the growing demand for sustainable suppliers and help local and national brands continue to exceed their sustainability goals - all of which creates a positive impact on our environment.”
Beyond becoming the first printer in Massachusetts to hold an active SGP certification, Shawmut Communications Group was certified with zero corrective actions.
“Passing our SPG-audit on the first try is a tribute to our team’s hard work and the focus we have on sustainability throughout the organization,” adds Kristin Spanier, Shawmut’s Sustainability Program Manager. “We’ve adopted our new sustainability policies and procedures as a mindset and SGP-certification is just the beginning. I’m excited to monitor our progress and witness the impact we can make through sustainable printing processes for years to come.”
As part of the certification process, Shawmut has already identified its first continuous improvement project. The organization plans to recycle all plastics with the “chasing arrows” symbol 1–7, reducing their trash volume by 5%. Per SGP-requirements, Shawmut will monitor their progress using SGP’s Impact Tracker and report performance metrics annually for each continuous improvement project.
Known as the gold standard for sustainability, SGP-certification goes beyond regulatory compliance. SGP advocates best practices and innovation among print community stakeholders, aligning the printing industry and its customers in the pursuit of a more accountable sustainable supply chain. SGP’s multi-attribute certification is unique in the printing industry as it takes into account the entire print facility, its process, product, and social areas. SGP certification elevates a printer into an elite group of top sustainable printers, recognized by both print buyers and the printing industry.
“Our SGP-certification is more than just another logo to put on our website,” adds Kristin. “It provides transparent, measurable assurance that Shawmut will help print buyers meet and exceed sustainability goals.”
SGP’s sustainability criteria have been adopted by industry leaders throughout the print supply chain, household brands such as Wal-Mart and REI, and major industry trade groups such as Flexographic Technical Association, the Tag and Label Manufacturers Institute, and the Specialty Graphics Imaging Association. Collectively, SGP facilities drive profits, efficiency, and accountability for the world’s leading brands.
