SGS Summarizes US EPA Expansion in Restriction on Methylene Chloride to Cover Most Uses
SGS publishes SafeGuardS to help businesses stay compliant with the new US ban on methylene chloride and stringent workplace requirements.
- (1888PressRelease) June 01, 2024 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 077.24 to provide stakeholders with an overview of the expanded restrictions on methylene chloride (dichloromethane, DCM) issued by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
DCM was originally banned in paints and coating removal products for consumer use under Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) Section 6(a) in 2019. A proposal was then made in May 2023 to regulate DCM in a more extensive manner. This rule was finalized on April 30, 2024.
SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory and market changes that can impact their business. SafeGuardS 077.24 details the expanded restrictions on DCM and includes important information on the 37 of 50+ conditions of use that are prohibited for this solvent. It also includes details of the date of enforcement for each prohibition, plus information on exemptions.
In addition, the SafeGuardS covers the new strict workplace protections being enforced through a Workplace Chemical Protection Program that ensures the remaining uses of DCM do not harm workers.
Businesses using DCM are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 077.24 to learn more about the restrictions to ensure they stay compliant with US requirements.
