SGS Summarizes Revisions to EU Guidance on Aquatic Toys

SGS publishes SafeGuardS looking at the EU’s revised guidance for classifying whether an aquatic product is a toy or not. End Quote

(1888PressRelease) February 16, 2024 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 023.24 to provide stakeholders with an overview of the revised guidance on aquatic toys issued by the European Union (EU) in December 2023. This guidance helps businesses clarify whether an aquatic product is a toy or not.

Changes to guidance document number 7 include:
• Providing additional information regarding inflatable bath toys with the inclusion of examples of toys intended to bear the weight of a child and not
• Clarification that fish rings intended to be thrown to the bottom of a mini or small pool for a child to pick up while sitting are toys. This separates them from diving sticks with no play value intended for dive practice

It also seeks to clarify that the following products are not toys:
o Inflatable floating leisure articles larger than 1.20 m (examples):
 Tubes
 With child-appealing design (candy, watermelons)
 Animal patterns (cat faces) or animal shapes (swans, unicorns, etc.)
 Mattresses
o Swimming aids
o Snorkeling masks
o Diving rings and other diving products
o Baby floats, baby lying rings and baby neck-rings
o Water walking balls
