  • (1888PressRelease) September 10, 2024 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has summarized a notice under section 71 of the Canada Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA 1999) requiring businesses in the country to provide information on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

PFAS, also known as ‘forever chemicals’ are a group of synthetic substances which resist degradation and build up in the environment as well as in living organisms.

312 PFAS compounds are subject to reporting requirements under the Canadian notice; when they are manufactured, imported or used as a standalone substance, in mixtures or in articles, in the calendar year of 2023.

CEPA 1999 Section 71 PFAS specifies the varying reporting requirements, breaking down PFAS compounds into three parts.

Reports must be submitted to the Environment and Climate Change Canada Single Window reporting system by January 29, 2024, with additional time on request prior to this deadline.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulations that may impact their business. SafeGuardS 132.24 provides a helpful table summarizing scope and product categories for CEPA 1999 Section 71 PFAS.

Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 132.24 for more details.
