SGS Summarizes New Zealand Proposal to Regulate Three POP Chemicals
SGS publishes SafeGuardS highlighting New Zealand’s consultation on plans to regulate methoxychlor, dechlorane plus and UV-328 as persistent organic pollutants.
- (1888PressRelease) September 06, 2024 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published details of New Zealand’s consultation over the addition of methoxychlor, dechlorane plus and UV-328 to its list of regulated persistent organic pollutants (POP). This follows their listing by the Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention’s Annexe A (elimination).
Dechlorane is most commonly used as a flame retardant, methoxychlor as a pesticide and UV-328 as an antioxidant for plastics. Specific exemptions for dechlorane plus and UV-328 were announced in New Zealand’s Environmental Protection Authority’s proposal, which would amend the country’s Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996.
If the listings are approved, the proposed date of entry into force will be February 26, 2025. Comments will be accepted until September 2, 2024.
SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulations that may impact their business. SafeGuardS 124.24 provides a useful table specifying the description and uses of the three chemicals.
Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 124.24 for more details.
