  • (1888PressRelease) May 17, 2024 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 064.24 to summarize Minnesota’s guideline for the restriction of lead and cadmium in various consumer products.

Products containing lead and cadmium are regulated in Minnesota under HF 2310, which was signed into law in May 2023. The legislation applies to fifteen products categories:
    1. Chalk, crayons, paints and other art supplies
    2. Clothing, footwear, headwear and accessories
    3. Cosmetics and personal care products
    4. Costumes, costume accessories and children’s and seasonal party supplies
    5. Craft supplies and jewelry-making supplies
    6. Cups, bowls and other food containers
    7. Fidget spinners
    8. Jewelry
    9. Keys, key chains and key rings
    10. Outdoor games
    11. Play sets and play structures
    12. Pots and pans
    13. Puzzles, board games, card games and similar games
    14. School supplies
    15. Toys

Lead is restricted to 90 ppm (0.009%) and cadmium to 75 ppm (0.0075%).

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) has now issued a guideline to help stakeholders comply with these restrictions.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory and market changes that can impact their ability to operate. SafeGuardS 064.24 includes details of the products within the scope of the regulation and a table with highlights of the guideline, covering details such as product components, less-accessible components and compliance determination.

Stakeholders are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 064.24 for more details.
