SGS Summarizes EU Proposals Over Quality Control Rules for Food Contact Plastics

SGS publishes SafeGuardS summarizing EU proposals to revise food contact plastics and GMP requirements to improve quality control. End Quote

(1888PressRelease) April 25, 2024 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a summary of a proposal by the European Commission (EC) to revise food contact plastics and good manufacturing practice (GMP) regulations.

In March 2024, the EC ran a consultation over a draft regulation that would, if adopted, revise the following pieces of legislation:
• Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011 on food contact plastics
• Regulation (EC) No. 2023/2006 on good manufacturing practice (GMP)

The revisions are designed to strengthen quality control for food contact plastics by ensuring consistency with Regulation (EU) 2022/1616 on recycled plastics and Regulation (EU) No. 528/2012 on biocidal products. In addition, substances obtained from waste and natural materials will be required to meet purity requirements and there will be migration testing requirements for multi-layer materials, including repeat testing. Finally, the proposal adds quality control rules to GMP.
